Notes for 10/19/11 – The Holy Spirit pt. 1

19 Oct

First things first: Yak n’ Snack is at Phil and Marsha’s house this Sunday night, so come on over! We’re taking the van after church and will be bringing it back at 9. They have a Wii, so bring games you’d like to play (within reason, kind of like Just Dance 1/2). Also, they have Apples to Apples, which I will be mercilessly beating everyone at. Just a fact.

And now, on to the fun part: LESSON NOTES! These are scripture references and a loose outline of what we talked about. If you’d like more info, email me at joshmosley07@gmail.com and we can talk about a time to sit down and work through it. Also, be back next week for part 2!

Thanks to Kevin DeYoung and the Gospel Coalition for the booklet that most of this came out of!

1 John 4:13

By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

The Holy Spirit

Ruach – Hebrew
Pneuma – Greek

Both words can refer to wind or breath, and both words bring to mind energy, motion, life, and activity.

The Holy Spirit active in the Old Testament:

Creative
Genesis 1:2

Artistic
Exodus 35:30-35

“Then Moses said to the people of Israel, ‘See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and will all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver—by any sort of workman or skilled designer.’”

Powerful
Judges 14:5-6

Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

The Holy Spirit active in the New Testament

Teacher/Sufficiency
2 Corinthians 3:4-6

“Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

Life/Kinship with God
Romans 8:6-10

“For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”

So who is the Holy Spirit?

Jesus without a Body?
The Force, like in Star Wars?
Excitement about God?

None of the Above

The Holy Spirit is a Person
He is God
He is distinct from The Father and the Son

What comes with Him?

Galatians 5:19-24

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

What does He do?

Convicts Us

John 16:7-11 (Jesus)

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”

Converts Us

John 3:5

“Jesus answered him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

Ezekiel 36:25-27

“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

Applies to Us

“So crucial is our union with Christ that Paul uses this ‘In Christ’ language about 160 times.” (DeYoung, Carson, Keller)

Next Week:

Glorifies Jesus

John 16:13-25 (Jesus)

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
